An industry that entertains the world . . . that is a great line about the TV industry.
So what do you do? I entertain the world!
The Emmy’s trot their way onto the small screen every Fall. For some of us, the Emmy’s trot their way into our hearts and closets. I always think the Emmy’s are important, but not so much for their awards. It’s the speeches. It’s always about the speeches. Acceptance speeches are still speeches and have to follow my basic rules of communication.
And yet so many don’t. They don’t follow my rules or apparently any rules. The reason you should care and that we all care is that when they don’t follow the rules they are boring. And what a shame to gather the most creative people in and on TV and be boring.
NO THANKS to Louis Anderson for his acceptance speech for the first Emmy of the night. BORING. A laundry list of thank you’s. Where was the heart?
An hour and a half into the show and THANKS to Jeffrey Tambor from Transparent. This is a great example of what a speech can be, even an acceptance speech. He had a definite and specific call for action, as all speeches need to have. He called out the acting community to ask them to give auditions to transgender actors. WOW! A moment to use communication to move an agenda forward.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus was both funny and touching, THANKS. She apologized to the world for giving us a TV president and blending the lines between politics and TV for the American public. Then as her hand shook, and with tears in her eyes she told the world her father had died on Friday. We all held our collective breath as we weren’t sure if it was a joke. It was not. Her father was a billionaire yet she has starred in three sitcoms in her career.
Courtney B Vance – THANK YOU for owning the stage. You came up and with award in hand; you verbally and visually owned the stage.
THANK you to Jeffrey Tambor for telling the music gremlins to stop, he wasn’t done.
THANKS to Giuliana Rancic for showing us that just because you talk about fashion does not mean you can always execute it well. A pony tail for the Emmys? Really? JLo can rock Blush, but a skinny Giuliana, not so much. THANK YOU for getting it wrong.
NO THANKS TO ANY RECIPIENT USING THEIR PHONE TO READ THEIR NOTES. It never works!
THANKS TO JIMMY KIMMEL for a great job as host. He was in the moment, funny, not mean, but still cutting edge. He is up there with Billy Crystal, a step behind Johnny but up there. Liked the PB&J sandwiches too.
THANKS to Henry Winkler for his sincere and expressive salute to Garry Marshall. But NO THANKS to the suit – the NO tux that he wore in doing so. Visual always counts. Wearing a tux would have been no big deal. But not wearing one, was noticeable.
THANKS TO CHUBBY BOYS FROM THE UPPER WEST SIDE WHEREVER YOU ARE!!!!
