Lessons From My Father

I loved my dad’s stories. Others didn’t share my affection for them. From the time I was a little girl I could tell when people’s attention span would wane as his stories went on and on.

They were always good stories. From what I would today refer to as “observable, measurable evidence” others would have preferred a shorter version.

EVERYONE HAS GOOD STORIES TO TELL. Many people tell the wrong story at the wrong time and don’t tell it well.

Presently I am working with two people just focused on learning how to tell their story.  Numbers are rarely memorable while stories can be unforgettable.  Do you remember your favorite bed time story? Mine was Queen Cat. Stories tell truths and have a twist. Can you identify your own best story?

Embrace the Rules of Communication for All Communication

1.  Speech to Receive Award

A successful businessman/prospective client messaged me on LinkedIn. He was to receive an award and would need to “say a few words.” Kudos to him to see that the opportunity to say a “few words” benefits from preparation and practice.

Lesson Learned: We videoed twice so the client could practice and I could edit and critique. As the event drew closer, its importance seemed to grow. Archie Griffin was also on the program. Do you prepare for the “little” opportunities?

2. Installation Speech

I wrote a speech for a client with a beginning, a middle and an end. The night of the event my client chose to eliminate the introduction and start at the body of the speech. Without the introduction the audience felt the speech was “dry.”

Lesson Learned: Every speech requires an intro, a body and a conclusion. The introduction engages the audience from the beginning of the speech. The rules are the rules. Do you understand that all comments benefit from an introduction?

3. To Interview Well

There are many parts of the interview process that you do not control. Let’s say most of the parts. You control you, your message and your environment to a degree. Part of what you can control is to practice your answers out loud.

Lesson Learned: The criteria to answer is the same criteria I use for all speeches. The answers should be answers only you could give. Practice out loud and move away from generic to authentic. Do you practice answers out loud?

So Tevi’s graduation night from novice obedience came with its own surprises. The “hard” requirements such as the LONG SIT and the LONG DOWN Tevi did great. The simplest command he didn’t carry out once, not once. All he had to do was SIT each time I stopped, as he has done for 16 months since he started puppy school. To an easy SIT his answer was NO.

Which confirms my philosophy in life that there is no such thing as little things or big things. A little thing has the potential to be big at any time. The 3 minutes that made up our “test” seemed like 30 minutes when he wouldn’t SIT. And that was a BIG thing.
