Lessons From My Father

My dad was the original Mr.-Fix-It. He got things done decades before Larry The Cable Guy became famous for his line, Git-R-Done. He was resourceful in his Git-R-Done techniques, always figuring out a way to accomplish his fix-it mission.

There is one perfume, Angel by Thierry Mugler which has a different twist than other perfume options. Angel comes in a glass bottle that is shaped like a star. When you finish the bottle, you can go to the perfume department of some stores, and they refill it for you. It is a way to recycle and it cost less than the purchase of a new bottle.

For some reason in the midst of our weird supply chain, I could not find any store that could refill my star. They were out of the refill perfume. I was getting near the very end of my bottle when I came up with a strategy. I made a list of all the stores in a 40 mile radius that I thought might have this liquid gold. I started calling each one asking to speak to the “Angel expert.”

At one store in Cleveland I hit pay dirt. The Angel expert suggested I go online and buy my own supply to refill myself. I went online, ordered, and waited.

Here’s the funny thing. It turns out that now it cost me 1/3 of what it cost me at the store. Like my dad, I kept going until I Git-R-Done.

Stay on Your Cutting Edge

If you have attended an event at my office, it is likely that it began with a Budweiser Clydesdale commercial. No one tells a story better AND I like to begin with a smile and a tear!

After a one year absence, the Clydesdales are back at the Super Bowl. The commercial was released on YouTube 12 days before the kick-off and garnered over 1 million views.

Anheuser-Busch gave its fans what they want: these majestic horses led by Olaf and the Lab. Do you listen to your clients and give them what they want?

Pulling Back the Curtains on the Making of We Are the World

Waylon Jennings walked out, Madonna was left out, and Prince opted out.

1. First One to Get There

Michael Jackson co-wrote the lyrics, but didn’t want to perform. Quincy got him to say YES. While everyone else was at the Grammy’s, Michael was rehearsing by himself in the studio. He came up with the idea of using Swahili, which was eventually voted down.

Lesson Learned:  No matter who you are, and where you are in your career, showing up counts. MJ showed up, Prince did not. Showing up first and putting in the work is always important. Even if you are MJ, all of your ideas may not be great. Do you show up early and do the work?

2. The Last One to Leave

Diana Ross was in the prime of her career when We Are the World was recorded. During a break, which involved chicken and waffles, she sheepishly asked Darryl Oates to sign her music. Floodgates opened and everyone asked each other to sign their music.

Lesson Learned: Rehearsal started after the Grammy’s were over, so it was 6am when the recording was finished. Diana Ross was the last person to leave. She said, “I don’t want this to be over.” Do you savor every moment before moving on to your next challenge?

3. Sign of the Night

On short notice 40 “superstars” came: some flew across the country without even knowing why. Some just said yes when asked. Some would have solos, others would only be in the chorus. Lionel Ritchie won 6 Grammy’s that night. Producer Quincy Jones posted a handwritten sign as the superstars entered, Leave Your Ego at the Door.

Lesson Learned: Cyndi Lauper’s boyfriend thought the idea was a loser. John Denver wanted to be in the studio and was denied. The room had to be cleared for an intimidated Bob Dylan to record, Huey Lewis got an unexpected solo, while The Boss wanted to re-record because he thought he was not great. Can you leave your ego at the door?

Benji, challenging as he was as a puppy, has become the perfect dog compared to the puppy. Tevi has exceeded the challenging part of puppy Benji. As challenging as Benji was, Tevi has far exceeded Benji in his daily antics.

I came home to find a small empty canister. First, I had to play Inspector Clouseau to find out what was in the now empty tub. Turns out Tevi ate the lip balm. The whole container which I came to find out was 10 grams.

I called my veterinarian’s office. I was told to call Poison Control. I called Poison Control and was told that number was for humans. I was to call a different number for dogs.

I called that number and was told it was $95 to talk to a human.

I hung up and called my vet back and told them they had to help me. I was told what ingredients to look for that could be harmful.

I had purchased the balm at Trader Joe’s so I then called them because the ingredients were printed so small on the product side that I couldn’t read them especially with dog drool.

Fortunately the lip balm he ate was organic and could not hurt him. Even though it was chocolate scented I learned there was no chocolate!

Trader Joe’s was very helpful, patient and calm.
